What does I Don’t Need A Prince By My Side To Be A Princess by Kilian smell like?
This fragrance smells sweet, vanilla, and powdery with very subtle and very sweet marshmallows and a hint of green tea. Wearing this scent makes me think of roasting marshmallows over a campfire with some pieces of ginger grated over it.
Even though the scent is marketed as being unisex, the marshmallow note makes it somewhat of a hyper-feminine scent, but the touches of ginger and green tea manage to calm down the sweetness.

My Experience
When I spray this perfume, I don’t get that marshmallow note in the opening. Instead, I get a sweet and spicy note that comes from the ginger and green tea. It’s a very cozy and comforting aroma. I was a little bit disappointed at first that I didn’t get the marshmallow, but it turns out I just needed to be a bit more patient.
After a while, the marshmallow really comes out and takes over the scents and adds a bit more sweetness while softening the ginger notes. It also adds a little bit of powderiness to the fragrance. While at this point, I found the fragrance to be sweeter, the ginger didn’t disappear, so it still has that nice spicy and zesty undertone to balance out the fluffy and sweetness of the marshmallow.
I can start picking up the Vanilla and Benzoin in the dry down, and the Benzoin really adds that extra bit of sweetness without making it overly sweet. This is such a pretty scent that also is super balanced without being sickeningly sweet or cloying.
When the fragrance wears off, it turns into a skin scent that is marshmallowy and subtle, which I love.
Sillage & Projection
On my skin, the sillage and projection is moderate. This scent isn’t going to punch people in the face, but they will catch a whiff here and there.
Longevity & Versatility
The one thing I’m not loving about Kilian Princess is that it didn’t last so long. I don’t find it to be an all-day fragrance on the skin alone. It performed a bit better when I applied it with vaseline, so it lasted a little bit longer. I’ll probably also still try to layer it with another scent to see if I can prolong the longevity.
This fragrance is definitely a crowd-pleaser without any offensive notes, so it’s office-proof as well. I’ve actually been wearing it to the office, and I’ve got a fair amount of compliments. I feel like I could wear this for almost any occasion. I’ll definitely be wearing it throughout the year, with the exception of summer. It feels like it might get cloying in really warm heat.
Closing thoughts
If you are a gourmand lover, you absolutely have to try this fragrance. And if you love that sweet and fluffy marshmallow note, then for sure, this is for you. So if you are familiar with the notes and like scents such as Prada’s candy, then this is a safe blind buy.
Also, if you find By Kilian, Love Don’t Be Shy to be overly sweet, Princess is a good alternative that incorporates that lovely marshmallow note without leaving you smelling like a candy shop.
I think it’s quite a unique scent as the ginger is really a unique note in my opinion. So overall, I’d say this is full bottle worthy!
