Authentic Night Homme by Abercombie & Fitch is a fragrance released in 2020 as part of the Authentic collection. This Amber Fougere Eau de Toilette for men came out simultaneously with the women’s version and soon became very popular.
The perfumer behind Authentic Night Homme is Gil Clavien. Besides this fragrance, Gil also collaborated with Abercrombie & Fitch on Abercrombie Moments for women.

The perfumer explained how she used Authentic Night Homme to tell a story. She wanted the bottle to have a see-through look to show the tension and contrast in the design. The formula itself was also created in a way to maintain this contrast. Therefore, Gil used refreshing apple and rhubarb to oppose the deep, masculine aroma of the base and middle notes.
According to her, Authentic Night Homme is meant for those who live life by investing a lot of energy and don’t look back on life with regrets. In the collection, Authentic Night Homme brings a fresh, dynamic, and warm aroma that celebrates freedom and unexpected moments in life shared with friends.
I got Authentic Night Homme as a gift from a co-worker who likes similar fragrances as I do. He said it reminded him of Baccarat Rouge 540, so I was excited to try it.
What Does Authentic for Men by Abercrombie & Fitch Smell Like?
The top three dominant tones in Authentic Night Homme by Abercrombie & Fitch are apple, rhubarb, and lotus. The middle notes are vanilla, lavender, and clary sage, and the base notes are tonka bean, leather, and oakmoss.
Top Notes | Apple, Rhubarb, Lotus |
Middle Notes | Vanilla, Lavender, Clary Sage |
Base Notes | Tonka Bean, Leather, Oakmoss |
The top notes of apple and rhubarb are very strong, so flowery middle notes are used to balance them out and keep the scent masculine. This effect has been completed with dark base notes that create a woody aroma.
My Experience
Abercrombie & Fitch has pretty similar formulas in all of their fragrances. As I am already familiar with some of the brand’s fragrances, such as Fierce, which has a similar composition, and Authentic for Man, I wanted to check how innovative Authentic Night Homme is as the darker version of the fragrance.
As soon as I applied the fragrance, I liked the fresh, not overly sweet, fruity notes in the opening. The green apple dominates the initial aroma, but not enough to make it unpleasant. The blend of top notes made Authentic Night Homme quite refreshing, especially since the rhubarb was also very present, giving the fragrance a different vibe than others in the collection. Like the apple, the rhubarb doesn’t have typical sourness, which makes Authentic Night Homme unique.
I am typically a fan of darker, woody fragrances that empower me. Therefore, I often avoided fruity scents. However, this Abercrombie & Fitch fragrance played well with the aromas, and how rhubarb was combined with other notes, such as lavender and sage in the middle notes, made it very interesting. I felt that wearing Authentic Night Homme made me stand out in a crowd, and the fragrance itself had some uniqueness that I liked very much. Authentic Night Homme had, because of this combination, a seductive and dark vibe that I didn’t expect from so many fruity notes in the formula.
Speaking of dark vibes, the key to this aroma is also the concentration of tonka beans. Additionally, the woodiness from cedar and cardamom is a great way to complete the formula and make the fragrance even more sensual as it sits on the skin.
I can understand why many people thought Authentic Night Homme was a flanker of Fierce since they have similar aromas in the formula. On the other hand, I think Authentic has a more modern twist, a better balance of notes without harsh transitions, and a bigger change in scent than some fragrances, as well as Fierce.
I didn’t see a similarity with the Baccarat Rouge 540. The only thing they have in common is a darker blend of aromas, but nothing like the ones in the world-famous 540.
Silage & Projection
Authentic Night Homme has a good silage that is in line with other Abercrombie & Fitch perfumes. It can be felt nicely for a decent amount of time, even with only one spray. The projection is also good for this type of fragrance, even though there is room for improvement.
Longevity & Versatility
The longevity of Authentic Night Homme is a bit disappointing since it lasts about 6 hours. I had to reapply it throughout the day. Furthermore, it retains the majority of the fragrance formula throughout wear.
However, I like Authentic Night Homme because it is versatile and can be used day and night. It is an addictive masculine fragrance that works all year round.
Conclusion
Authentic Night Homme really surprised me. I enjoyed the new formula that sets nicely on the skin. It is quite different from the previous fragrances I used, and I really liked the freshness and pleasant smell of the fruity-floral combination.
After a while, when I noticed the woody, darker smell that made the scent mysterious and dark, I knew I had found the best fragrance. Additionally, this contributed to the masculine vibe of the fragrance without being overwhelming. I felt the aroma was very recognizable, and it made me feel super confident.
Indeed, Authentic Night Homme is a nice fragrance that feels mature and affordable, so I will definitely buy a new bottle once I run out of my gift.
